Wednesday, August 31st, 2011: On this day in 1997 Diana, Princess of Wales, died in a car crash with her companion, Dodi Fayed, in Paris, France. Although press photographers had been pursuing her car, French courts determined that the paparazzi were not responsible for the crash but rather a driver operating under the influence of alcohol. Diana, a very popular British royal who worked on behalf of many charities, was mourned all over the world.
Today is “Love Litigating Lawyers Day.” Lawyer jokes abound, but when push comes to shove, these are the folks who can end up saving the day.
On this day in 1897 Thomas Edison received a U.S. patent for his motion-picture camera, known as the Kinetoscope, amid rival claims by inventors of similar machines. Edison had developed the camera and its viewer in the early 1890s and had staged several demonstrations.
