The FDA has issued a new warning on treats you may feed your pet. Dating back to 2007, the agency says that they've received reports of more than 3,600 dogs and 10 cats getting sick after chowing down on eating jerky pet treats. Of those reports, more than 580 pets have died.
Bernadette Dunham, director of the FDA's Center for Veterinary Medicine, said, "This is one of the most elusive and mysterious outbreaks we've encountered." Most of the jerky treats connected to the pet illnesses were made in China, but the FDA still hasn't figured out what exactly is causing the outbreak.
"The illnesses have been linked to many brands of jerky treats," the FDA says. "The one common factor the cases share is consumption of a chicken or duck jerky treat or jerky-wrapped treat, mostly imported from China."
