Brevard Feel Good Story: 2 Students Named Finalists in Science Competition

Every year during the Dr. Nelson Ying Science Competition, five students from across Central Florida are selected to present their scientific research to a Judges panel. One winner is selected to receive a cash scholarship as well as cash prizes for their teacher and their school.

The 2 BPS finalists for the 2020 Dr. Nelson Ying Science Competition are:

Kyle Bramblett, Titusville High School, for trying to see if an artificial structure could have significant effects on oyster growth, increasing oyster spats, and improving water quality. Bramblett was named First Runner Up, earning a cash prize of $1,000. During his presentation, Kyle made a point to thank his teacher, Mrs. Jennifer Cotton, for all of her support and guidance over the last two years. Kyle also received recognition last year as a First Runner Up in this competition.

Nathan Foo, West Shore Junior/Senior High School, for testing to see if mechanically simulated kangaroo care is an efficient and feasible method for treating preterm babies. Foo was named one of two Grand Award Winners, earning a cash prize of $5,000. West Shore and Nathan’s teacher, Mrs. Paula Ladd, will each receive an additional cash prize as part of the competition recognition. This is Mrs. Ladd’s second consecutive year teaching a Grand Award Winner. West Shore’s Pooja Shah was a Grand Award Honoree in 2019.
